TASK A: A DIARY OF A PARIAH

Dear Diary ,
I live in an area where it is unfair . Are all the countries as bad as this ? How can they be so cruel ? I hate to be social outcast or known as , the Untouchables . A position where no one once to be . It is undesirable , accompanied with a lack of respect oe even no respect , authority, and access to society at large .
I can’t believe the caste system is so rigid . I want to be like other children being able to read and write . I wish we could learn , but , no we are outcast . Whatever our father’s do we would take after them . My father’s someone who can build ceramics . Soon, I will take over that job eventhough I’m better at sewing .
I wish and wish that I would be able to be one of the upper class like the Brahmins ,but, I know it is impossible . They choose my life . I follow .

Signing off,
Hakira

Dear Diary;

The night was so cold I could not sleep; fortunately the loving smell of cow manure and the regular breathing of the animals made me doze off.

Today's the first day I am going to hunt. Isn't it exciting? It's Papa's and my secret; we didn't tell Mama or Shameena. They wouldn't let you go, Papa says. In the morning I went to gather wood and again the bullies poured their urine over my head. I was so relieved; today wasn't that much. I told Mama about it and she shook her head and wiped me clean. I thought I was lucky today; why did she shake her head? I want to know.

I sneaked past Shameena and I went into the forest to hunt. I wanted to go with the other hunters, they look so big and strong. But Papa pulled me back and told me never to talk to them or their children again. I was confused; why can't I? I want to know.

I saw a deer and shot it and it fell! I let out a whoop and ran to it, and I saw hunters already there. They were picking up MY deer, slung it over their shoulders and just walked off! I rushed at their backs, but Papa pulled me back. I am so angry with Papa now. He is so much bigger than them; why didn't he get back my deer? We searched for another catch, but I guess today we have to eat grass again.

We went home and turns out Shameena was crying too. She tried making friends with the other girls at the well, but they ignored her. She tried to help them to draw water, but when she touched the jars, all the girls screamed and their mothers ran out. They used whips to drive my sister back to 'where she belongs'. (I don't know what they mean. We are all living in the same village.)

I was so angry. Shameena felt so much pain she cried the whole day. I want to cry too. My beautiful deer.

Positive
Although the caste system has been outlawed, the government made up a different name for a “caste system”, “positive discrimination”. The “positive” discrimination is in reality just another caste system, separating the higher class from the lower class. Even though the positive discrimination is considerably less severe than the original caste system, it still limits a person’s true potential. The sad story of Indian’s continual caste systems just goes to show what happens when the true God is left out of a culture.

Negative
· The lowest class is being discriminated and it cannot be helped if you are born into the lowest class. The highest class will always be teaching but if they are not clever enough, they would be passing down wrong information.
· The lower caste people were resentful of the fact that they could never rise up in their varnas in their lifetime.
· The pariahs, who were outcastes, were not even treated properly.
· A lot of empires which invaded India used the caste system for their own advantage, thus it was the Indian people who were at a disadvantage.
· People were forced to interact with only their caste as the knowledge was inbred in them. Thus, they could not see the caste system at large and had to be contented with their position in the system
· The caste system was not based on meritocracy and so people who had more intellect than the Brahmins could not rise up to that level.

Disavantages
-There would be exploiation
-There would be lack of mobility
-It is unfair to have an ascribed status
-It will cause societal problems
-It will cause discriminations
-People will not have the motivation to climb up the social ladder
- Due to the fact that Singapore is a merit based country, if the caste system is introduced, Singapore will no longer be merit based
- No progress in the nation

Avantages
- There will be division of labour
- Society will be more organised as everyone will know their role and status in life
- The caste system has lasted for centuries in India and there has been no revolts so far

1. Why would each varna approve/disapprove of the caste system?

The Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras would most likely approve of the caste system as it either benefits them or inflicts no harm upon them. However, the outcastes will most likely disapprove of the caste system because it makes them looked down upon by others of the caste.

2. What makes it fair/unfair?

The caste system is fair because it has fixed laws and the people have fixed occupations, therefore giving the country stability. It is also unfair because people of the lower caste who may have better talents will be unable to cultivate it and rise up in society.

3. Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?

It is impossible to apply the caste system in Singapore as it is a multi-cultural country, unlike India, where Hinduism in the main religion. By applying the caste system to Singapore, which is infused with Hinduism, will raise religious disputes.
It is possible to apply the caste system to Singapore as it is a fixed hierarchy where the occupations are passed down from father to son. Therefore, we do not need to take examinations to ‘upgrade’ ourselves.

1..Why would each varna approve / disapprove of the caste system?

· Each varna has a different opinion on the caste system. For example, the Brahmins would approve of the caste system as it would ensure their positions as permanent leaders. But for the Pariahs, they would disapprove because it would take a long time for them to move up in the society, if they could be within the society. In short, the upper caste would approve of the caste system because they would secure their position and ensure power but for the lower caste, they would always be looked down upon because they cannot change their positions in the system, change into a higher, more powerful caste.

1. 2.What makes it fair/ unfair?

· The system is unfair because if there were more capable people to rule the country in the lower class, they would not able to rule due to the fact that the system is rigid and inflexible meaning that they would not be able to change their position and lead the country to the right path.

3. 3. Would it be possible to apply the caste system to Singapore?

No it would not be possible because Singapore is a multi racial country and regardless of race, language or religion, everyone in Singapore has a right to be respected and not looked down upon. Applying the system means dividing Singapore and that should not be the case because Singaporeans should work together as one to defend and make Singapore a better place to live in.

Heyyy...this is my group's Task, the diary entry of a Pariah.

PARIAH’S DIARY ENTRY.

Dear Diary,
They took my mother. I don’t know where they took her. The cruel, evil routine guard took her away from me. I cried. I knew I couldn’t beg the guards; they would only beat me up. So, I’m left alone. They took my father, they took my mother and my sister was brought to the “room” for being rude to the guards. I want her to come home. But she can’t. She stays till she suffers. That’s what the guards keep saying. But no one ever returns from the “room”. I am left alone in the darkness. I have to get back to work now. I need to get rid of some bodies. The guards didn’t say what kind of bodies. But I can guess. My family is gone but I don’t want to go too. I know its worse wherever they’re brought. I just have to keep living my life of suffering.

From,
Likya

Hi 1P! This is Chor Ying posting for group Mother Teresa! This are the answers for the questions for Week 3's tutorial lesson. We also presented our answers in class.

1-Why would each varna approve/disapprove of the caste system?

-A Brahmin would approve of the caste system but a Shudra would disapprove. Brahmins will approve as they are at the top of the caste system and therefore even if they are not smart, they will still hold their positions as a Brahmin. Shudras would disapprove as even if they are very capable, they will forever be a Shudra and can never rise into a higher rank in the caste system. Kshatriyas and Vaisyhas would also disapprove as they would all want to become Brahmins, the highest position in the caste system.

2-What makes it fair/unfair?

-The future generations will not be able to rise through the ranks and hold a higher position even if they are capable of doing so. However, by applying the caste system, the society is more organized.

3-Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?

-No, it would not be possible. If we try to do this in the modern society, our future generations would not study hard as they would get the same job as their parents and their future will still be the same. There could also be race and religion riots.

We did not manage to present our powerpoint slides to the class and so we are putting the slides up on our history blog. Our topic is the strengths and weaknesses of the Qin dynasty.

Heyyyyyy this is Le Xuan, Nadia, Deanna, Shian Chun and Shu Min.
• Why would each varna approve / disapprove of the caste system?
- If you were of a low rank, you would disapprove as you would never be able to rise up in society. If rulers were corrupt and unjust, the lower ranks could not do anything to change their society as they were born into a specific caste.
- If you were of a high rank, you would approve as you would not need to work for your position.
• What makes it fair / unfair?
- (Unfair) Even if you were skilled in some other area, you would never be able to change your occupation.
- (Fair) Everyone has a place in society.
• Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?
- No. Singapore is a racial and religious country. We believe that everyone is equal. We all have an equal chance to rise in society by merit.

Positive effects of caste system:
- Everyone has a place in society.
- Enhance stability of country.

Negative effects of caste system:
- Even if you are capable, you cannot rise in society by merit.
- People will never get a chance to try other things, do other work or make other friends.
- There may be genetic disabilities if the blood type is not varied.

Advantages of caste system in Singapore:
- Singapore’s economy will be stable.
- Citizens will have a sense of belonging.

Disadvantages of caste system in Singapore:
- There will be racial and religious riots as people may not want to follow the system.
- People may not work hard as they have a mindset that they have a fixed position and have to resign to their fate.

Here is Hua Mulan's Caste System Reflections!

Reflections about the Caste System

Why would each Varna approve/disapprove of the caste system:
The Brahmins would approve of it as they were the highest of the 4 Varnas and they had top priority in everything. They led one of the better lives compared to the rest of the caste.
The Kshatriyas would also approve, as they are the ones who are rulers and warriors. Therefore because of that, they probably have some power and thus would approve of their caste system. However on the other hand, they might disapprove because they may not be willing to risk their lives to fight.
The Vaishayas are merchants and farmers therefore they might approve to it. They had harvest and it can act as a source of food and income and power to them. However, they might disagree to it, as it might be too laborious especially for the farmers. They may disapprove to it as they contributed a lot to the society; they not only get nothing in return but are also placed as third class in the caste system.
The Shudras may disapprove to it as they have done many laborious jobs but their works are taken for granted and are considered impure by the higher Varnas without even given a chance to develop their skills and talents.
All in all each Varnas system may disapprove to it as they are not allowed to marry someone from other Varna, making things very difficult for them.

What makes it unfair?
The lower caste might have more capable people based on merits to rule the country. Even if you were a good person in your previous life, being in the higher caste doesn’t necessarily mean that you have the merits to rule a country.

What makes it fair?
The caste system is fair as it is believed that the Varna a person was given birth into is affected by how a person behaved in their previous life. Thus, if someone was a good person in their previous life, they will be born into a higher Varna. So, it is expected to have good people in higher Varnas to rule over the other people.

Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?

The caste system should not be applied into Singapore because Singapore, being a racial and religious country, would have different racial marriages and friendships from different walks of life. People of different occupations have been used to the life of having so many different people around them. Singapore is a meritocratic country and we have bonds with each other. A person of a lower class may have a relationship with a person of a higher class. People of our countries come from different backgrounds, some rich, and some poor. We have different lives but we have our own strengths and weaknesses for the benefits of Singapore. Equality must be maintained in Singapore.

Confucius: Yexin; Charmaine; Iffah; Lois; Tong Fei
1.How would each Varna approve/disapprove the caste system?
I think that the 4 main varnas will approve of it as they have a secured position and can do something. However, i think the Pariahs will disapprove of it as they are considered as the untouchables, and cannot move up to become a higher class.

2.What makes it fair/unfair?
-It is unfair because there is no meritocracy and the Vaishyas and Shudras cannot increase their rank even though they have the talent.
It would be fair for the Brahmins and Kshatriyas as their whole generation will be respected

3.Would it be possible to apply the caste system in Singapore?

· No, it would not.

· Because it would be unfair and it would affect us

· Singaporeans like us would not like people to be above us.

· Besides, there might be some clever people in the lower class which cannot move up to the upper classes to benefit the society.
